What is a sea whip in Shadow and Bones?
In the books, we're given a bit more backstory on the sea whip. The legend says the creature is a cursed dragon prince named Rusalye. Forever stuck in the form of the sea serpent, Rusalye is made to guard the waters bordering the Bone Road, a northern portion of the True Sea.
The two go to find the stag before the Darkling can and grow close again before confessing their love for each other. Alina gets Mal to promise to her that he should kill her if they are about to be captured by The Darkling, as she does not wish for her powers to be used against her will.
While they manage early on to find and kill the ice dragon Rusalye, aka the sea whip, it takes them until the end of the season to realize that the final amplifier, the firebird, is actually Mal.
Alina Starkov is the first known Sun Summoner in existence. Unlike the Darkling, who is descended from Morozova and inherited the same Shadow Summoning powers as his mother, Alina's ancestry is unclear.
The sea whip is a sea-dwelling dragon. The legendary beast was found in the pages of stories. Bardugo's books describe the sea whip as “a shimmering, undulating white shape.”
Grisha are only able to use one amplifier. The only known exceptions to this were Alina Starkov and Zoya Nazyalensky. Some Grisha can also be born as living amplifiers, able to magnify the power of other Grisha with just a touch.
Mal was oblivious to Alina's love from before book one even began. He slept with Zoya and countless others before he realised who was waiting by his back door.
During the Shadow Fold crossing, volcra attack the sandskiff, but Alina lets out a burst of light killing the volcra in order to save Malyen. Better known as the Sun Summoner, Alina is the protagonist of the series. As one of the most powerful Grisha, she is the only one capable of saving Ravka from the Fold.
Alina Starkov
In the beginning, the Darkling and Alina felt drawn to one another. Before Alina left the Little Palace, the Darkling kissed her abruptly by the lake, after he told her about the stag he was hunting.

Between the novels Siege and Storm and Ruin and Rising, on which season 2 is largely based, Alina loses her Sun Summoner powers completely for a time after a fight with Kirigan. She also ends up gaining a piece of the Darkling's power and vice versa.
In the book, however, Alina uses merzost through her still-active connection to the Darkling in order to create her own nichevo'ya (shadow monsters like the Darkling uses) to fight back against him at the end of the second novel. As a result of her using the power that one time her hair turns permanently white.
